Post-secondary

Latest: A date for negotiations has not yet been determined.

Post-secondary members work as vocational instructors and support staff at post-secondary institutions across B.C. Compensation and workload are their key bargaining issues.

Quick facts:

  • The BCGEU negotiates 14 local agreements directly with post-secondary institutions and two supplementary common agreements with the Post-Secondary Employers' Association (PSEA).
  • The two common agreements include one for vocational instructors and one for support staff working in post-secondary institutions.
    • The common agreement for instructors covers BCGEU members working for Camosun College, Coast Mountain College, Northern Lights College, Okanagan College and Selkirk College. BCGEU members working for Vancouver Island University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology participate in bargaining preparation, and we're hopeful the employer representatives will participate this round as well.
    • The common agreement for support staff covers BCGEU members working for the British Columbia Institute of Technology, Coast Mountain College, Douglas College, Justice Institute of BC, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Northern Lights College and Okanagan College.
  • Common agreements cover members of the same union working in the same occupation for multiple employers. They can also be called multi-employer agreements. They detail wages and major benefit details (while other benefits are detailed in the local agreements).
  • The BCGEU is the only union covered by these agreements representing over 4,100 members (1,244 instructors, 2,927 support staff).
  • All of the previous collective agreements took effect in 2022 and will expire in 2025.
